Summerland Drags media release
16-12-10
Drag racing enthusiasts will be delighted with the news that promoter David Lander has set the dates for the first two of four drag racing events for 2011.
The development approval to conduct drag racing on the Casino airstrip allows four drag racing events a year for five years and was approved by Richmond Valley Council at its October meeting.
The main condition of approval is to have more than 1200 on-site car parking spots to minimise the effect on neighbouring streets. This will require some earthworks and drainage which will be attended to as soon as weather and resources permit.
"It’s pedal to the metal for drag racing on the Casino strip," David said today in an interview on 88.9 FM.
"Our first event, weather permitting, will be held in only three months, on Saturday, March 19."
"The second event will be held during Casino’s Beef Week, on Saturday, May 21."
"I congratulate Council for its persistence and integrity in dealing with such a thorny development application.”
120 competitors are already booked in for March 19, leaving only 30 vacancies. Aspiring competitors should go to summerlanddrags.com .
To be held at 50 Haughwood Road, Bora Ridge at 2 pm
on Sunday the 12th of December, 2010.
AGENDA
Summerland Drags Media Release
17-11-2010
Richmond Valley Council has given the nod to hold 1/8th-mile drag meetings for the next five years at the Casino airstrip.
There will be four meetings a year held between March and October and the first is scheduled for March 19, 2011.
The approval has come with many restrictions, some of which will have to be costed before we go ahead.
The biggest concern for the council was the parking, which will require the spectators’ cars to be parked within the venue.
Some drainage and earthworks also have to be done before our next drag meeting.

An update
Richmond Valley Council has informed Summerland Drags promoter David Lander that it needs more preparation time for the drag racing Development Application before it.
Even though this completely re-planned second drag racing DA, supported with more than 1000 signatures, was lodged a month ago, Council has been unable to process it in time for Council’s September 21 meeting.
"I suspect that this second frustrating delay for the many drag racing fans and competitors is partly due to the intense resistance of the elitist few who oppose any use of the aerodrome by non-aeronautical people,” David said today.
"Drag racing fans everywhere are asking how can the elitists continue to prevent the community’s use of the community’s property?
"Nevertheless, I am confident that eventually Council will make a positive determination in favour of the greater majority and democracy will prevail.
"Until that time, which will hopefully be Council’s October 19 meeting, none of us – the 100 or so Summerland Drags volunteers, the thousands of fans and competitors – are able to plan ahead. But, we will race again on the Casino strip, maybe one evening in late October, maybe late March 2011.
"As soon as I know, the community will know."
David Lander can be contacted on 0408 222 908 or at the Lismore Speedway office on 6621 2733 should any competitor who has paid to compete at a future Summerland Drags event wish to be refunded.
Summerland Drags Media Release
17-07-2010
Summerland Drags promoter David Lander has announced that additional final planning is needed to gain consent to the drag racing Development Application before Richmond Valley Council.
David explained that whilst Richmond Valley Council has performed its dual role commendably as the consent authority and as the owner of the Casino Aerodrome, the increasing popularity of Northern Rivers drag racing has created extra planning requirements.
“We need extra time to get it right. So in the best interests of drag racing fans, competitors and sponsors, as well as the broader community, I have decided to postpone the previously scheduled July 31 event until early Spring,” David said.
“A little bit of pain now to lock in four annual events for the next 10 years or so will be well worth it. Think of it as an anti-flu injection.
“Competitors who have nominated for the July event will of course be automatically listed as competitors for the next event, or if they choose, the late Spring event.
“Drag racing fans, competitors and sponsors can express their support for drag racing in Casino by writing to the General Manager, Richmond Valley Council, Locked Bag 10, Casino 2470. Quote DA number 420/2010, or via email on council@richmondvalley.nsw.gov.au "
David went on to say that new event dates will be announced next month.
“As soon as I know, the community will know,” he added.
